Reiki – The Scientific Evidence
R E I K I is Good for You!
Both Zimmerman (1990) in the USA and Seto (1992) in Japan investigated the large pulsating biomagnetic field that is emitted from the hands of energy practitioners whilst they work. They discovered that the pulses are in the same frequencies as brain waves and sweep up and down from 0.3 - 30 Hz, focusing mostly in 7-8 Hz, alpha state. Independent medical research has shown that this range of frequencies will stimulate healing in the body, with specific frequencies being suitable for different tissues. For example, 2 Hz encourages nerve regeneration, 7 Hz bone growth, 10 Hz ligament mending, and 15 Hz capillary formation.
Zimmerman’s studies show that the brain wave patterns of practitioner and receiver are not only synchronised in the alpha or theta state, but become left-right balanced. These are both indicators of deep relaxation and meditation and this experience is typical of Reiki.
The effects of regular meditation on health have been extensively studied at more than 200 universities, hospitals and research institutions in 27 countries. The most important contribution to health appears to be in primary prevention.
Over a 5 year period, meditators consistently had fewer than half the number of doctor visits and days in hospital, compared with controls. Hospital admission rates for medical and surgical conditions were 60-70% less in the meditating group, with 87% less for diseases of the heart and blood vessels, 55% less for tumours, 73% less for respiratory disorders, 87% less for neurological probems and 30% less for infections.
Further studies have shown that meditation has an effective relief from stress, a significant reduction in the use of alcohol, cigarettes and non-prescribed drugs, as well as a significant reduction in medical expenditure.
Although the above studies are not directly about Reiki, they do show the positive effects of regular meditation. Meditation is the state known to be induced by Reiki. They also support the holistic nature of this type of therapy which is that it works to achieve overall balance and wellbeing rather than being symptom specific.
It is worth mentioning that those who receive Reiki regularly seem to find it easier to meditate than before. Most probably, the treatments provide an example of ‘body learning’ whereby repeated exposure to the alpha or theta states make it easier to achieve by oneself.
It has been scientifically proven that Reiki practitioners emit healing waves at a range of frequencies. Different frequencies stimulate healing in different tissues and Reiki appears to vary according to the type of healing needed.
During a Reiki treatment, the practitioner and recipient go into a deeply relaxed and meditative state. The health benefits or spending time in this state regularly are numerous.
Once you learn Reiki, you can give yourself daily self-treatments and therefore induce this healing meditative state

Do a Reiki course! You will learn how to give yourself a treatment, give treatments to others and breathing techniques for Reiki meditations. All of these induce the brain wave patterns also called a ‘meditative state’ along with the health benefits.
Don’t give up before you’ve started! Many people find it difficult to meditate yet after learning Reiki it comes more naturally.
Be creative! Once you’ve learned Reiki, you can simply connect to the energy and feel it start to work. I connect to Reiki in many places: on the tube, sitting in a chair waiting for my next client, waiting for a bus… Even a few minutes are beneficial and Reiki can help you make the most out of those three minutes.
Get into a routine. Some people prefer to wake up half an hour earlier and connect to Reiki before they get out of bed. Others do this as they’re drifting off to sleep. Rest assured that you will get the time back by feeling better during the day.
